The Utah Experience

Words and Photo: Erme Catino

Alta…that is all skiers need to hear before they begin to salivate with thoughts of deep powder.  I’ve been lucky enough to spend the past few weeks here and while I really haven’t taken many photos, I couldn’t resist how awesome our car looked at the end of the day.

The best part about these storms, is that it seems everywhere across the lower 48 has been getting in on them.  From Tahoe, to Utah, to just the other day New England – powder has returned!  Get Some!

Rossignol Skis – 2012

Words: Erme Catino

Ski companies are always thinking about next year…what will the new trends be, colors, rocker, etc.  It’s no doubt these guys have their hands full especially this time of the year when it seems like every weekend is a trade show and on-snow demo.

As skiers, we are always psyched to see what is on-tap for next year and peep what new gear is on the horizon…which brings us to Rossignol.  Four years ago Rossignol revolutionized pow skis with the cult status S7.  Here is a quick glimpse of Rossi’s 2012 line.

Starting from the left is the Super 7 (now in a 188cm, and 195cm), S7, S3 (the S7′s skinnier bro), S6 Jib (featuring U-Rocker, S5 (now with U-Rocker),  the S4 Xavier Bertoni and Kevin Rolland Pro-Models, and S2 (all mountain twin – with Captain America top sheet).  In the fall we’ll feature a full review, but for now you can drool and rest assure that these skis rip!

High Fives Foundation – Skiing with Steve Wallace

High Fives Foundation, the Tahoe-based 501.c.3 non-profit organization dedicated to raising money and awareness for athletes who have suffered a life-altering injury while pursuing their dream in the winter action sports community recently sent us their latest project, “Skiing with Steve Wallace.”  As Jamie from Volkl says, if everyone had the chance to ski with Steve, Roy, and the High Fives crew, the world would be a better place!
I can’t agree with him more. – Erme

Video and Words: High Fives Foundation

High Fives Non-Profit Foundation (Truckee, CA), Volkl Skis, Marker Bindings and Porters Tahoe present “Skiing with Steve Wallace” a five part webisode series chronicling the triumphant return to skiing by High Fives Winter Empowerment Highlighted Athlete, Steve Wallace.

About Steve Wallace: After a successful career as a ski racer, Steve Wallace moved out west to pursue the ultimate dream; ski powder everyday. In 2008, Steve suffered a burst fracture of his T-9 vertebrae while skiing Squaw Valley USA. After an endless pursuit to return skiing, the High Fives Non-Profit Foundation provided Steve with financial means to make this dream a reality in 2010 with Disabled Sports USA Far West.

Stay tuned for more adventurous episodes from our charismatic and enthusiastic friend, Steve Wallace! To learn more about Steve’s story, visit: highfivesfoundation.org/recipients.html#stevew

Porters Tahoe Marketing Chica – Kasey Wiese “Porters Tahoe is super stoked help to showcase Steve’s return to the snow. His passion for skiing and life runs deep and we are glad to be a part of it!”

Volkl Skis Regional Product Manager – Jamie Lavalle “Volkl Skis and I are very excited to work with the High Fives Non-Profit Foundation and Steve Wallace. Skiing is all about having fun with your friends and you can’t have a bad time when you are hanging with Steve Wallace. If everyone had the chance to ski with Steve, Roy (Tuscany) and the rest of the High Fives crew; the world would be a better place!”

Salomon FreeSki TV S4 E16 – JAWS

Video and Words: Salomon Freeski TV

Chuck Patterson is a former pro Freeskier, a professional Waterman, and one of the most fearless humans we’ve ever met. After a brief experiment with skiing on waves several years ago, Chuck’s passion for the idea was re-lit after watching Mike Douglas and Cody Townsend ski the waves of Maui in 2009. In January 2011, Chuck followed the biggest swell of the year to Maui, to see if he could see if he could successfully ski Peahi or ‘Jaws’ – one of the most powerful waves on earth.

The annual SIA trade show has come and gone leaving in its wake an empty convention center and a lot of empty beer cans.  Rather than loading a whole bunch of photos at once, we’re going to put up a few posts on Raise The Bar of vendors that we’re stoked on.  So take a look at some of next year’s gear!

Trew'ed up from the boot up!
